In addition to the Packaging Act (VerpackG), there is another important system in Germany: the Single-Use Plastics Fund (DIVID).

This affects companies that place certain single-use plastic products on the market and obliges them to register and pay fees.

Many retailers do not know that additional costs can arise in addition to the packaging license.

Single-Use Plastics Fund (DIVID) – Obligations and Costs for Businesses

What is the Single-Use Plastics Fund (DIVID)?

The Single-Use Plastics Fund is used to finance the cleaning of public spaces from plastic waste.

Companies pay levies for products that are typically discarded in public spaces after a single use.

When does the single-use plastic fund apply to you?

The single-use plastic fund applies to you if you sell products that:

  • are made of plastic

  • are used only once

  • are disposed of immediately after use

👉 This is especially relevant for takeaway products and certain disposable items.

Typical products that may be affected

Takeaway food packaging

  • Disposable cups for beverages

  • Plastic cutlery

  • Balloons

  • Tobacco products with filters

  • Certain disposable food containers

What does NOT usually concern you?

Shipping boxes

  • Product packaging (e.g. jars, bottles)

  • Cushioning material (e.g. bubble wrap)
